This is a picture of the Harbor Pilot leaving the Spirit as we "abandoned" the port in Hilo. Ground swells prohibited us from safely coming in. We were terribly disappointed because we had planned a tour to Volcanoes National Park. For that reason, we extended our stay so we could day trip back to Hawaii and see the park. Even though it was another vacation itinerary item that had us up at oh-dark-thirty it was worth every sleep deprived second

From the ship - a steam vent where the lava flows underground in a tube and then hits the Pacific.The lava is from Kilauea which started erupting in 1983 and is still flowing.
