Because of the heightned security they had to take the ship out of port overnight. Since we wanted to see sunrise at Haleakala Crater, we got off the ship and spent the night in Kula. At the time I wondered if the added expense was worth it not to mention getting up at 3:30 a.m. isn't really a vacation itinerary item for me.  These pictures tell it all.
It was a "I've never seen anything like it experience."

At over 10,000 feet, the temperature and I were both 40 something.  If you plan to do this you must bring warm clothes with you.
